Current schedule
The club is still in its infancy, and for now classes are offered on Monday and Wednesday afternoons only.
I look forward to expanding, and offering more classes with more coaches in the future.
If you are an advanced student/competitor looking for teaching opportunities, please get in touch.
Class Structure
The first hour of every class is structured learning, focussing on a specific concept or technique. This hour is split into two parts.
Introduction of a basic technique or concept
During this time slot we will single out a specific technique (either offence or defence) and break it down. We will cover the basic mechanics of the move, explore how your opponent may react to it, as well as how to anticipate these reactions to our advantage, and follow up with counters. We will then move into positional sparring.
Positional sparring
During this time slot we will work from a pre-determined position, with the goal of executing the technique or concept we have just learnt. The focus is on escaping, maintaining control or advancing to a dominant position, while your opponent tries to stop you.
The more techniques you know in the given position, the more problems you can present to your opponent, making it harder for them.
Conversely, the better your opponent can solve the problems you present, the better they can counter them and turn the exchange to their advantage.
This type of sparring is a great way to practice concepts like pressure, timing and positioning without having to start from a neutral stance each time. It is useful for beginners as it offers a means to drill techniques in a controlled environment and helps to build a solid foundation, before jumping into full sparring.
Workshop, questions, live rounds
During this time, I open up the floor for questions that may have arisen during the positional rounds and will attempt to answer as best I can. I will provide examples and take input from advanced students.
This is also the time for more advanced students who may wish to work on a specific technique or work on their own goals.
Sometimes questions appear during a class and a technique can be explored with potential improvements or shortfalls. This is the session to pressure test these improvements or shortfalls. The time spent on this session depends on the needs of the group that has shown on the day.
After the workshop/question session we will finish with live rounds until 6.00pm (or earlier) depending on attendance.
What Class(es) Should I Attend?
Children 8 years old and above can attend the technical introduction phase and positional sparring.
Adults (ages 15+) are welcome to attend all classes, however beginners may prefer the structure of the first hour and leave it at that.
It is beneficial for all levels to revisit fundamental techniques during the introduction phase, but should you wish to work on something specific and are already at an advanced level, you may prefer coming for the workshop and live rounds only.
The choice is yours.
At Tsukami we understand that people have busy lives and sometimes getting there on time can be hard. Please try, but if you cannot make it then you are welcome to turn up to whichever class works best for you.
Private and Group Sessions
If you are after a tailored session, we offer private lessons and small group classes for individuals, sports teams, youth groups and businesses. Please get in touch for more detail.
